This is an international collaborative production featuring choreographer Suzuki Yukio and Stopgap Dance Company, an inclusive UK dance company consisting of dancers with and without disabilities. This new form of inclusive dance emerged from an inspiring exchange between Suzuki, a practitioner of Butoh―a form of bodily expression originating from Japan―and professional dancers trained in dance and theater.
When we first met, we were breathing the same air.
As I listened to your words, I was hearing my own voice.
Suzuki Yukio
Suzuki Yukio began practicing Butoh at Asbestos-kan (Asbestos House) and has been actively pursuing his creative work since 2000. He has performed in over 50 cities worldwide, captivating audiences with his supple and delicate yet powerfully expansive body and dance performances that seem to overflow beyond the space. His work emphasizes physical expressions that free people’s bodies and senses to stimulate their individuality and emotions. His activities include participation in music videos, modeling, collaborations with musicians, choreographing children’s dance, and hosting workshops for disabled people. He was awarded the Choreographer of the Next Generation Prize at the Toyota Choreography Awards 2008. He was nominated as one of the 10 finalists of Danse Élargie held at Théâtre de la Ville, Paris, in 2012.
