Introduction

Has this fictional story from 3,000 years ago become fact today?

Homer’s “Odyssey” is a Greek epic poem about its hero Odysseus’s tough journey home to the island of Ithaca from fighting in a war at Troy.
In this production, Brazilian theatre and film director Christiane JATAHY, brilliantly mixes live performance and video images to connect Homer’s work with today’s world. Using footage she took in Palestine, Lebanon, Greece, South Africa and the Brazilian Amazon people locked into their own odysseys as others force them to move, she combines their first-hand accounts with them reading related excerpts from the ancient work.
This is JATAHY’s latest work in her own ongoing search for new ways of theatrical expression that transcend the borders of film and theatre, fiction and reality.

Synopsis

The Ancient Greek poet Homer’s “Odyssey” is a long epic poem about its hero King Odysseus’s tough and testing journey home to the island of Ithaca from the Trojan War. During his absence, his wife Penelope runs the palace and protects the royal fortune from people trying to make off with it. Then their son, Telemachus, sets off on a journey led by the goddess Athena in search of his father. So while some people defend their home from invaders, others leave to look for safer lands. For each it is their own fateful journey — just as this play is a contemporary “Odyssey,” a legendary story from 3,000 years ago that reflects life in 2020.
